Blizzard 2011

  1. Hurray for blizzard photos! I'm not complaining that we missed all that snow...Kudos to you for braving the mess.

Two general thoughts for both of these:

    1. They could have been brighter. They both look a bit under-exposed. If you're shooting in manual, that means slowing your shutter speed or opening up your aperture (make the aperture a lower number). If you're shooting in one of the auto settings, then adjust the exposure using the EV button (probably has a +/- on it).

    2. The white balance looks too cool, which is why the snow is blue. It's probably an acceptable amount, if the exposure was brighter (see #1), but being darker like this they should have a warmer temperature. Check your manual for how to adjust and fine-tune the different white balance settings.

Now, those technical issues aside, I like what you were shooting!

With the fence, I like the pattern and design that you saw, especially with the white snow as a background. You've got a good eye for finding patterns. But with this one, you're shooting from a standing up position away from the fence. Your shooting location makes feel like I'm far away from the subject, when what I want is for a photo to draw me in. Perhaps you could have gotten lower to the ground (yes, even with the snow!) and closer to the fence so I could be more level with, and get a better perspective on, the shapes and patterns that you saw.

I like the shot of the fire hydrant (I'm a sucker for lonely, solitary subjects). It would be helped by being better exposed, as I said earlier, because that would have made it a stark red against the white, instead of a muted, murky red against blue. But you recognized a good picture! In terms of framing, I am a little annoyed by the line up in the top left corner... it would have been better without it, or with that line all the way across the top. But seeing also makes me realize the constraints you faced when framing the shot, and makes me realize that you probably found one of the few good angles to shoot from that would include a bunch of mess and clutter. Nice job on that!
